During all Santa Anna's military cnreer,tlie-e aro the only charges of cruelty ofseverity which hnve been alleged againsi him. There is a mode of rensoning upon war which it is extremely difficult for on unsophisticated mind toappreciatp. American gentlemen, husbands and fathersjsend an army to collect a debt from some Mexican chieftains by bombarding Vei-a Cruz. By day and by night the awful storm of bomb sliells is i-ained down upon the devoted cily. Ch'istian gentlemen guide these guns and kindie these fires of heil. Mothors and daughters fly shneking through the slrcets, and their mangled limbs are buried beneath the ruina of their dwellirgs. These shells explode in infint nurserïes, by the bed-side of languishing disenso, in parlors of refinement and piety. Ladies have limbtorn from limb by the balls which American gentlemen lire. A large party of ladies, in the terror ofthat awful boinbardment, il y to the cellar of one of ihp mostcostly stone mansions, hoping.there to find re fu ge frorn these engiiiss oí destniction which liave demolished many iof theirdwellings, and by n bloody deatli berenved them of many of their dcarest friends. The thunders of the bombardment, the crash of the explosiona of bornb shcll.--, the shrieksof ihedying, pierce the darkness of the Cellar, and excite toa l'renzy of terror llie trembling femnles there. A shell fulls upon the roof of the house, decends into the cellar and explodes ; and the limbs of these mothers and maidens, mangled and gory, are driven into the walls. And this is honorable ' warfure ; this is Christian warfare ; and the result of such scènes is the subjpctfor civil rejoicing, bon-fircj and ilhiminations. And respectable men, humane men, men who sit at the table of Jesus Chiistashis disciples ; who publish pers (o guide the world to Chrislian feelings and practices, thisavery suitable way of collecting dcbts. Surelv man is a sfrange animal. Enlightoned reason guides lo most singular conclusions. It sslrange, very strange, ihat n humane man can, at ihis period of the worhl, throw such terrible missiles into a thronged city, and sleep at nighht, fee]ng tliat ha has done wcll, wliile at the same time conscience 'm so tender that otlier atrociücsof war, ncoinparably less dreadfuI,aredeemeH barbomiis. Man' will doem it not diffieult lo condemi the shooting of the prisoners at Jafta by Bonnpnrtfc, and the destruction of Fan ning's compaoy 6y oider ofanofficei of Santa Anna.while they do not cnd"mr
