Tliis Party questioned the Slate candidates of the Liberty pnrty and all o'.her parties in New York, In reference to the peculiar doctrines of the Reformers. Lewis Tap an gave the foHowing answers: "With regard to the mensures about which you request my opinión, I frankly state - lst. I have seen the pernicious efFects of monopolizing land, both in England and this country, and shou'd be in favor of limiting the "quantity of land any individual mny hereafter acquire in this State," if such a measure be practicable. 2H. I am in favor of "exernpting the homestead from alienation on account of any future debt, mortgnge or otlier liability," and wish that the Mosaic code could be adopted in this and other countries on this subject, if nothing better can be devised. 3d. I am in favor of preventing al! fu.-ther traffic in the public lands, &c. 4th. And of limiting "the hours of labor to ten on all public works, nnd in estab ishments chartered by law." Indeed, I think nine hours daily labor sufficient, and require no more of persons in my employment. lt would be agreeable to me to add a 5th to the measures proposed by your 'ssociation, v'.z. : In favor of tlie National Government employing only free men, who are capableof contracting and receiving their own wnges." Judge Jay declined taking any stand on tho points referred to, on the ground 'híxt he was a nandidate of the Liberty Party, which was organized for another purpose : but he improved the occasion for giving them a sound Anti Slavery lecture as follows : "You are etriving to limit the number of acres to be owned by crue individual, but 1 see no intimation of hostility to the iraflic in human fiVsh. You object to the sale ufa homotead topay the h nest debis oftheowner, but 1 find no pledgesagnirst the snle of men, omen m.d cliildren, to pay the debts of other people. You demand a pledge of your candidaies against traffic in the public lands, hut none fa the bodies and souls of millions of your countrymen. You require that the labourer shall in cerlain cases be prohibited by law to work wilh his own consent and for , astipulated rewnrd more than ten lioursa day ; but r.o eflbrt is proposed in behnlf of ihousands and tens of thousands of laborers, who re compelled to toil under the lasli to the extent of humn endurance without other compensaron than that afforded to beastsof burden, the means required by nature, to continue the ability to labour."
