One of these - Ihe great mprovement af surgical knowledge, whicli mny bo made through the splendid victories of a campaign - lias probaWy escaped the atlention of our readers. A correspondent of the Union recommcnds that the President appoint som o prncihioner to foll.jw in the track ol the army, and 'gather up the frogments of medical dnd surgisa] knowledge which may fall in thesevenl campaigns, and present tliem to the public.' Some of our cotcmporarics seem to be liorror-struck at this proposal; but, for our part, we regard t as a vory sensible suggestion. Sucli a general scene of caruage - such a tearing to pieres of the human body mny not be witnesser! ogain on so krge a scale fora quarier or a half centnry. Let the opporlunity be mproved for the good of mankind. A volume filled with the details of legs and arms laken ofF, skulls split, eyes destroyod, jaws fractured, bowels torn out, and similar accidenis of figluing characters, vvould be an interesting and profiiable commentary on the nature and consequences of war. What a number of cases war for a year or two vvould present ! - The w rit er in the Union tells us, - ■ " Nocampaigns, indeed, under Napoleon or Wellington, ever ajforded a finar ñeidfor medical and surgical reeords ihan tliose under Scott and Taylor ; and it would be a misforlune to the profession and llie world if ihey should fail to be preserved tlirougli a presa of duty and want of time and opportunity in the medical slaíTimmediately engaged in service."
