Mr. Cleaveland c-onceived the idea thnt pens of gold ivould be beiter and more economical than nny other material , he communicated his ideas to Mr. Brown, who mproved on them and wa the first maker of gold pens in ihis or any other country, After Brown cnme Bagley, and then a dozen others. Bagley i. the most ext ensive manufacturer, and employs a en pi tal of $80,000; his expenses are $1.000 per woek. The pro fit is estimated at nbout one half the amount of sales. In the manufacture of the pens, the gold is first rolled out in ribbons and then cul with a die lo the required shape ; the points put on and then ground down to the required nip. The points are Iridiurn, a metal formed from platinum, and are imported at a cost of frorn #70 to 875 per ounce. It is estimated thnt nol less than 1,000,000 of gold pens are anunlly made, and thnt 800 pounds are used in their manufacture. The demand s enornrious and .exceeds bupply.
