DETROIT IN 1820: Shortly after Hiker Evans visited the city on the 4,000-mile tour. This picture, showing the steamer Walk-in-the-Water, is from a sketch by the famous painter Whistler's father, George H. Whistler. Detroit is on the distant shore of the river.
