An e.xchange paper says that Mr. Clay is tlie only instance in our country's history of a.membèr of Congréss publishing' a general challenge to fight. He is thé only instance of a candulate for the Presidency being under bouds to keep the peacc. No Cabinet ofïicer, e.xcept Mr. Clay, has evor foisght a duel while holding thwt rcsponaible station. We have notlooked up tlie documents to ascertain the correctness of these positious. bui if they be true, it is certainly 'not much to the credit of Mr. Clay. - It will be soen also that they all relate to actual or contemplated personal vgenceOCf The Letter of Gen. Cass on Anexation, short as it is, seems to have unk the writcr.on.e liundred per cent in ie estinmtion of the eastern people. - . he newspapers f rom that quarter abound n the most disparaging and contemptuous olices of his letter. It seems to be regarded in that section as designed merely to get the nomination for President by viding this Southern hobby, and thus supplanting Van Buren, and thercfore asbeing in itself conclusivo ovidence that the author is a demagogue.
