T do not mean to say that Mr. Clay is an emancipationist - but I believe his feelings are with the cause. I know that thoee most immediately within his influence, approximale to myself in sentiment upon the subject of slavery. HEXR.T CLAT. ' So far as he ventures to interpret my feelings, he has entirely frisconceived tbem; 1 believe him to be equally mistaken as to those in the circle of my personal friends and neighbors generally. So far from the success of the Whig caupe hnving any injurious tendency, as has been alleged, I believe ït will havo a povverfd efiêct in tranquilizing and Jiarmonizing all parts of the Union, and giving confidenee, strength and security to all the interests of öur country.
