It is not uncommon to spenk of our soulhern neighbors ns a h'gli-minded and chivalrous roce. As a specimen of tlieir high-mindedness, look at the proposition of the Governor of Virginia to epel from that state, from their homes, all the free colored citizens there, amounting to nbout 50,000. His reasons are, that they are "an idle, thriftless, unproductive race." lt may be true ; but what has made them such 1 Is it not a crime :o teach them to read and write 1 Have they any redress for wrongs ? Can they testify in court ? First, degrade a Door helpless being by shuiting out fiom him all light, and then thrust him from the land of his birih, because he ís degraded !
